Proposals are already stressful enough. Keeping it a secret, choosing the perfect location, planning all the little details, and finding the right photographer to capture it all (hi, that’s where I come in).
Then something completely out of your control decides to join the planning process… the weather.
It’s something you don’t always think about until you’re planning a once-in-a-lifetime moment like this. Chicago weather can be unpredictable, especially during a rainy season, but sometimes those unexpected moments create the most beautiful memories.
Let me tell you the story behind this romantic rainy day proposal in Glenview, Illinois.
The proposal was scheduled for 6:30pm in Glenview, Illinois, about 30 minutes from where I live. With storms moving through the area, I left my house at 5:00pm to give myself extra time to arrive, get settled, and prepare for the big moment.
For hours leading up to the proposal, it had been storming. The groom-to-be and I were checking in throughout the day, both crossing our fingers that the weather would give us a little window.
On my way to the proposal location, I received a message that we actually needed to move the proposal earlier than planned. My GPS showed I would arrive just a few minutes after the new time, so we quickly adjusted and landed on 5:45pm.
As soon as I arrived, I got into position and prepared for the big moment.
And then it happened.
The rain paused, he got down on one knee, and they got their perfect “yes.”
I will admit, I was tearing up behind my camera watching everything unfold. No matter how many love stories I photograph, getting to witness such a special moment never gets old.
And the craziest part? As soon as I got in my car and started driving home, the rain started again.
Somehow, between an entire day of storms, we got the exact little window we needed.
A reminder that your proposal does not need perfect weather or perfect circumstances to become a beautiful memory. Sometimes the unexpected moments become part of the story.
